What was evaluated
The report covers version 1.0.10 of the Capption mobile application for Android and iOS.
Visitors use the application at museums, historic sites, and other cultural venues to access label content on their smartphones by tapping NFC tags. The application lets visitors adjust language, font, text size, and line height, and can present images, tables, and media supplied by an institution.
Evaluation included VoiceOver on iOS, TalkBack on Android, visual review, increased text size and spacing, and touch-gesture testing. The report does not evaluate Capption's website or administrative interface.
The evaluation was conducted by James Warnken, a digital accessibility specialist and IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies who brings lived experience with visual disability.
What the report found
The report documents support for many WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA criteria and identifies seven criteria that partially support the standard. Level AAA was not evaluated.
Areas identified for improvement
- Screen-reader treatment of some dividers, headings, lists, links, and selected settings
- A moving scan graphic on iOS without a pause, stop, or hide control
- Single-pointer alternatives for favorite and delete actions in iOS history
- Text and control contrast in parts of the iOS dark-mode experience
- Screen-reader announcements when text size or spacing changes
These items correspond to WCAG 2.2 criteria 1.1.1, 1.3.1, 2.2.2, 2.5.1, 1.4.3, 1.4.11, and 4.1.3. The report contains the criterion-level findings and platform-specific detail.
Ongoing work
The report records known limitations as of August 2026. Capption is actively addressing the documented issues and intends to publish an updated report as improvements are implemented.
Because the product changes over time, the report applies to the versions identified in the document and should be read as a dated assessment.
Content responsibility
Institutions author the exhibit content delivered through Capption. They are responsible for providing meaningful alternative text for images and accessible alternatives such as transcripts, captions, or descriptions for time-based media.
Capption encourages every content author to follow these practices so the visitor experience remains accessible from platform to exhibit.
